Looking Back on the 8th International ISFT Congress in Krems
Forest and its Potential for Health: From Evidence to Sustainable Practice | 13–15 October 2026 | Krems, Austria
From 13 to 15 October 2026, the International Society of Forest Therapy (ISFT) held its 8th International Congress at IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems, Austria. Under the theme “Forest and its Potential for Health: From Evidence to Sustainable Practice”, the congress brought together international researchers, healthcare professionals, scientists and practitioners to explore the role of forests in promoting human health and well-being.
This year’s congress was particularly meaningful, as Krems is the birthplace of the ISFT, founded by Horst Klinkmann and Heinz Boyer. Returning to its roots provided a special setting for scientific exchange, international cooperation and discussions about the future of forest therapy.
Connecting Science and Practice
The scientific programme covered a broad range of topics, reflecting the growing interdisciplinary importance of forest-based health interventions.
Following the opening addresses by Heinz Boyer, Udo Brändle and Horst Klinkmann, ISFT President Manfred Baum offered insights into the society’s work and its international activities.
Throughout the congress, keynote presentations, scientific sessions and discussions addressed important developments in forest therapy research and practice.
A particular focus was placed on forest therapy for children and young people, including its potential contribution to mental health, emotional well-being and healthy development. Other presentations explored clinical and therapeutic applications, stress reduction, professional standards and the integration of nature-based interventions into healthcare systems.
Further sessions examined the certification and sustainable use of healing forests, innovative educational approaches and the opportunities that forest therapy offers for tourism and regional development.
Contributions from researchers and practitioners across different countries highlighted both the diversity of international approaches and the importance of developing shared scientific standards.

International Exchange and New Perspectives
Beyond the presentations, the congress provided valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue, professional networking and the exchange of ideas.
Discussions focused not only on scientific evidence but also on the practical challenges of implementing forest-based health interventions, strengthening cooperation between different sectors and making forest therapy more accessible.
The programme was complemented by cultural and social activities, including a gathering at the Kunstmeile Krems and an evening programme at Göttweig Abbey, creating opportunities for personal exchange in a welcoming atmosphere.
Experiencing Forest Therapy at Göttweig
A special highlight of the congress was the excursion to the Healing Forest at Göttweig Abbey.
Developed through a cooperation between IMC Krems and Göttweig Abbey, the healing forest demonstrates how scientific knowledge, forest management and health promotion can be brought together in practice.
The guided visit and workshops offered participants an opportunity to experience a practical application of forest-based health concepts and explore their potential for prevention, therapy and well-being.

Looking Ahead: ISFT Congress 2027 in South Korea
The congress also marked an important step in strengthening international cooperation.
During a ceremony at Göttweig, the ISFT and the World Forum on Forest Therapy signed a cooperation agreement establishing the basis for the next International ISFT Congress.
In 2027, the congress will take place in South Korea, marking the first time this international gathering will be hosted in Asia.
This development reflects the growing global interest in forest therapy and offers new opportunities for international scientific collaboration.

Thank You for an Inspiring Congress!
We sincerely thank IMC Krems, the organising and scientific committees, all speakers, partners and participants for their valuable contributions to the 8th International ISFT Congress.
The congress once again demonstrated the importance of connecting scientific research with practical applications and international cooperation to advance the understanding of forests and their potential for human health.
We look forward to continuing this exchange and meeting again in South Korea in 2027!
